55th Annual Rolex Big Boat Series has Officially Kicked Off in the San Francisco Bay.

The 55th Annual Rolex Big Boat series has officially kicked off in the San Francisco Bay. Seventy-nine teams and racing yachts have gathered on the shores of Crissy field to be apart of this historic event. The Big Boat Series is the West Coast's most competitive regatta, and teams prepare more than a year in advance. Preparation is vital for success; tides this week have an average of a five-foot swing in the morning, creating awkward situations for many yachts. The race directors have an enormous list of courses depending on the wind conditions and all different types of boats. There has been one significant addition to this year's Big Boat Series with the inclusion of the Classics class. The classic course will have five yachts, each that were built before 1955 and measure at least 48' LOA.

Racing for the 55th annual Rolex Big Boat Series is set to begin today, September 12. Conditions are light today, where San Francisco's Indian summer is in full effect. St. Francis Race Committee aspect to score two races per day for the regatta's first three race days of racing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

In the past Sunday has historically featured a single long-form Bay Tour course that give an opportunity for shore-based spectators to have an exciting downwind finishes right off of St. Francis Race Deck.
